CAST NAND Flash Controller Supports Latest High-Speed Memories and is Ready for ONFI 3
Woodcliff Lake, NJ, November 16, 2011 — Semiconductor intellectual property (IP) provider CAST, Inc. is now shipping an improved, sixth-generation version of its successful NAND Flash Memory Controller IP core.
· Toggle-Mode Double Density Rate (DDR) devices from Toshiba and Samsung, and
· ClearNAND™ integrated memory and error correction devices from Micron, with support for the EZ-NAND ONFI 2.3 protocol.
The core is also designed to satisfy the Open NAND Flash Interface (ONFI) 3.0 specification—which targets speeds of 400 MT/s—and is currently being hardware verified with advanced production ONFI 3.0 compatible memory devices.
The core continues to be one of the best available NAND Flash controllers, implementing most critical functions in hardware (including error correction, bad block management and encryption), supporting high-speed data transfer, and providing configurable options that enable the smallest area, least power consumption, and lowest price for each specific memory application.
David Chen, principal engineer at DRS Signal Solutions, Inc., said recently: “I selected the CAST NANDFlash Controller for its functionality, support for ClearNAND Flash and ONFI standards, and backing by a well established company that is a Certified member of the Xilinx Alliance program.”
Sourced from the memory experts at long-time CAST partner Evatronix S.A., the royalty-free controller core is available in synthesizable RTL for ASICs or optimized netlists for FPGAs. Versions range from a lean, asynchronous-only core ideal for long-term or boot-code storage applications through a full-featured, high-speed core for applications needing the full bandwidth of the latest memory devices. Integration is simplified by interfaces to standard system buses AMBA® AHB and AXI, Avalon, CoreConnect PLB, and OCP.
Using the new NAND Flash Controller Core is part of an overall design strategy to achieve the highest possible memory data input and output rates for advanced applications. CAST and Evatronix will host a webinar on this topic November 30, 2011. Those interested should please register in advance.
The NAND Flash Controller improvements are part of CAST’s continuing, 18-year-long commitment to provide the best IP products—and the best experiences using them—available anywhere. Learn more by calling +1 201.391.8300 or visiting www.cast-inc.com.

Advanced Semiconductor Technology Ltd. (AST) has been chosen by Berkeley Design Automation (BDA) to be its distributor and technical representative in Israel.
Berkeley Design Automation, Inc. is the recognized leader in nanometer circuit verification. Analog, mixed-signal, RF, and custom digital circuitry is the biggest differentiator and the most difficult design challenge for nm integrated circuits. Running at GHz frequencies and fabricated in CMOS silicon processes, these circuits introduce a new class of verification problems that traditional SPICE, RF, and digital fastSPICE simulators cannot adequately solve.
Berkeley Design Automation combines the industry’s only unified verification platform,
Analog FastSPICE, with exceptional application expertise to uniquely address these challenges. Nearly 100 companies, including most of the world’s top 20 semiconductor suppliers, rely on Berkeley Design Automation to efficiently verify their nm-scale circuits.
The AFS Platform is a single executable that seamlessly integrates into the industry’s leading design environment to deliver:
Foundry-certified nm SPICE accuracy on every run
5x-10x faster single-core performance than any other SPICE circuit simulator
Circuit characterization that scales near-linearly with the number of cores
>10M-element capacity for post-layout circuit verification
>120 dB transient dynamic range for high-precision analog/RF analysis
Full-spectrum device noise analysis proven within 1-2 dB of silicon
Verilog co-simulation for nm SPICE accurate mixed-signal verification
Founded in 2003, Berkeley Design Automation has received several industry awards in recognition of its technology leadership and impact on the electronics industry. The company is privately held and backed by Woodside Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, Panasonic Corp., NTT Corp., IT-Farm, and MUFJ Capital.

PLX is the first company to promote the Three-Lane PCI Express Gen2 Switch, Adds Four-Lane Device to Industry’s Broadest Portfolio
SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 18, 2011 – PLX Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLXT), the leader in connectivity solutions for the data center and the home, today announced the industry’s only three-lane PCI Express® (PCIe®) Gen2 switch, and a new four-lane PCIe Gen2 switch, both of which are in the market’s smallest 10x10mm QFN packaging. With samples available in early July, the PLX® ExpressLane™ PEX8603 (3 lanes, 3 ports) and PEX8605 (4 lanes, 4 ports) switches offer very low power requirements, down to 0.6W typical, have exclusive optional x1 and x2 port configurations, along with unique debug diagnostic circuitry backed by powerful free software tools.
Targeting a rapidly emerging PCIe landscape ranging from the enterprise to the consumer, these new devices are ideal for energy-sensitive, form-factor-restrictive, cost-conscious markets including digital televisions, set-top boxes, home gateways, security systems, cable modems, DVRs, multi-function printers, digital media servers, video surveillance, and numerous other control-plane and embedded applications.
“As the industry’s first three-lane PCIe Gen2 switch, the PEX8603 gives designers an unprecedented new choice of high-speed yet highly efficient 5Gbps non-blocking interconnect performance,” said David Raun, PLX vice president of marketing and business development. “PCI Express is now readily available on all the processors in the consumer market and customers need PLX switches to expand connectivity to various endpoints, such as WiFi modules and USB 3.0 devices. Engineers can confidently bridge PCIe Gen1 and Gen3 designs knowing that the forward and backward compatibility of the standard will sustain their architectures.”
“Power and size efficiencies are driving development of a new generation of semiconductors targeted at emerging and fast-growth market segments, from consumer electronics to full enterprise systems,” said Rob Lineback, senior market research analyst at IC Insights. “PLX has factored this imperative into its expanding PCI Express switch lineup, with its lower-lane-count devices particularly suited for applications demanding such efficiencies.”
PLX ExpressLane PCIe silicon and supporting software provide the high-speed interconnect in server, storage, enterprise and consumer products from manufacturers worldwide. This family of more than 50 highly configurable devices ranges from three to 96 lanes, three to 24 ports, the industry’s lowest latency (down to 110ns) and power (as low as 0.6W), as well as comprehensive PCIe bridge solutions. In addition to having the industry’s largest family of PCIe Gen1 and Gen2 devices, PLX recently introduced the market’s first PCIe Gen3 (8Gbps) switches – six devices ranging from 12 to 48 lanes designed to optimize servers, communications systems, graphics, and other performance-demanding applications.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing for the new PEX8603 and PEX8605 devices ranges from $4.00 to $6.00 in volume. The products will sample globally in July 2011 and will be in full production in Q3’11.
